Presenting Symptoms;
• severe rumbling after a meal
• Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GErd) and heartburn
He was well-connected, so there had been many kinds of investigations, but no cause for the problem had been identified. his bloodwork revealed a deficiency of vitamin d, low levels of vitamin b12, hypothyroid and fatty liver grade 1. his tTG marker (for celiac disease) was negative. Certain he was still gluten-intolerant, we put him on a modified grain diet. He began responding positively to the elimination within days. The acid reflux resolved and the irritating and embarrassing sounds from the stomach began to die down. he now follows the modified grain diet and has resumed normal work, which he couldn’t because of the embarrassing rumbling sounds, until now.
The Case of the Too-Thin Man;
Mr s., sixty-five, came with a history of digestive issues and low immunity. he would fall sick easily. he had a low bMI of 18 and was underweight, at just 56 kg. despite being too thin and the fact that he was very careful about his diet, he was borderline diabetic. he was also on antidepressant medicines for a few months.
Presenting Symptoms;
• had a stroke because of low sodium
• underactive thyroid
• Was often ill, got frequent sore throats
His haemoglobin was quite low (8–9), but the vitamin b12 levels were high; this is usually a picture that accompanies chronic inflammation. our analysis was that this was a case of malabsorption. I told him to go gluten-free, in order to take care of his inability to gain weight and to help with his recent depression. he followed the diet strictly and came up to 62 kg, didn’t get a sore throat and moved off the antidepressants in just a few months. A changed life!
