The Jules Rimet Trophy, which Brazil won in 1970 and displayed in a case at the Rio de Janeiro offices of the Brazilian Football Confederation, was stolen in 1983.
As per IE, it is widely assumed that the trophy was melted down and the gold sold because it has not been found as of yet. According to the BBC, only the trophy's base was found and is now on exhibit at the Fifa World Cup Football museum in Zurich, Switzerland.
By the way, this was the second time the trophy had been taken.
Prior to England hosting the World Cup in 1966, it was stolen in London during a public exhibition. But the trophy was found in the bottom of a dumpster just seven days later, wrapped in newspaper by a dog named Pickles!
The Jules Rimet Trophy was replaced by the Fifa World Cup Trophy in 1974 after Brazil won it. It has been awarded to the winners ever since.
The trophy, created by artist Silvio Gazzaniga, weighs 6.175 kg and has 4,927 grammes of pure gold inside.
And due to security concerns, champions take a replica home!
