Under Todd Boehly’s ownership, Chelsea have spent around 300m pounds and above during the January Transfer Window.
The current Chelsea squad is as bloated as it ever was during the Roman era whilst this level of quality in the squad was never seen under the Oligarch’s regime. This begs the question: Will the Chelsea squad implode too soon because at the rate of addition of their roster?
The Chelsea squad already consists of players yet to be successful at the club with the likes of Pulisic, Ziyech, Chilwell, and Havertz. On top of that, recent additions like Sterling, Aubameyang, Wesley Fofana and Koulibaly have not helped their case of signing for the club. The Academy graduates Broja and Gallagher don’t have a lot of minutes under their belt for their development due to the talent roster at the club. Also, Lukaku could be back in the summer because Inter are unlikely to sign him permanently.
Beyond all this, Chelsea went ahead and signed another 8 during the window(Malo Gusto and Nkunku will be joining in the summer and Felix will leave in the summer). While Enzo’s addition is welcome given how depleted in quality Chelsea’s midfield looks and Mudryk having a good cameo against Liverpool, it is still mind-boggling as to how Graham Potter is going to integrate all of these new signings while also finishing in the top 4. If Chelsea do not finish in the top 4 this season, then all of this spending becomes vain and FFP rules would choke Chelsea’s transfer budget in the future windows because now, Chelsea do not have the backing of Roman’s bottomless pit of money. It seems Chelsea’s board are all-in too soon and if Potter doesn’t finish top 4 this season and start winning trophies in the 23/24 season, it seems natural for the club to restart the process all over again.
