European scuba divers who were carried away by strong currents spent 12 hours in shark-infested waters before making their way to a remote Indonesian island where they encountered another life threatening predator.
On Thursday afternoon, the divers dove from their wooden boat off Tatawa island into dangerous currents. Before swimming to Rinca, their final opportunity to avoid being carried into the open ocean, they drifted 20 miles from their dive site.
On the palm-lined beach of Rinca island the next afternoon, the divers—three from Britain, one each from France and Sweden—came face to face with the enormous predatory lizard – none other than, the Komodo Dragon.
The dragon had set it eyes on one of the divers and was refusing to leave. Apparently, its eyes did not leave the diver's feet, which it most probably took for its next meal. She attacked it with a belt, which the lizard easily munched on. The other divers kept hitting the komodo dragon as well, trying to protect their friend and themselves.
Lucky for them the Lizard retreated after they struggled enough. For the next 2 days, they survived on raw shellfish and whatever they could find there – hoping the lizard wouldn't smell it and come back in their direction.
An indonesian rescue boat took notice of them and they were rescued, finally.
"We're safe but absolutely exhausted and dehydrated," Charlotte Allin, the 25-year-old British diver said.
