The Indian automotive market is witnessing a significant shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) with Tata Motors’ budget-friendly Tiago EV leading the charge.
Following suit, MG’s Comet EV has also received a warm welcome. The trend underscores a growing preference for cost-effective electric cars within the Indian market, especially those priced around INR 10 lakhs.
The segment has further expanded with the entry of Citroen eC3. Additionally, electric models of Tata Punch and Hyundai Axcent are on the horizon.
Skoda is also planning to launch its most economical electric SUV, priced around INR 13 lakhs, to compete with Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV400.
Before launching the new electric SUV, Skoda will introduce the premium Enyaq EV. The upcoming electric car from the company might be modified according to Indian conditions and could be built on Volkswagen’s MEB platform.
It’s anticipated that a completely new electric platform might also be introduced. The aim is to create a vehicle that is both economical and profitable. The design is speculated to resemble the recently launched new Kodiaq.
Converting existing vehicles to electric could be a significant step towards making electric vehicles affordable, reducing the design and development costs.
To cut costs, it could be presented with a single motor FWD layout with a battery capacity of around 40kWh to 45kWh. The EV is expected to launch in 2025 with a starting price of INR 12.5 lakhs, while the top models could be priced up to INR 16.6 lakhs
