I have seen challenge after challenge issued on social media. Nothing ever comes of it, except perhaps one person lying about how they destroyed the other person or the other person did not show.
It is quite amusing to read these exchanges between two people from behind the safety of their own keyboards.
Now to the real point. Martial arts is about respect. As it has been said, "martial arts begins and ends with respect." There is no point in these challenges especially when one party is expected to travel 1000 miles or more and float the expenses.
Not too mention, if you do actually end up meeting, both parties could face criminal charges.
There was a time when there were friendly challenges where two people could still test their skills against another without the fear of police action.
Today, you can both go register at a martial arts tournament and challenge each other. Yes, you would both be confined to the tournament rules, but you could still challenge each other.
Back to the point. Martial arts and respect go together.
