The legend - Gurbachan Singh Randhawa, first athlete to be confered with Arjuna award
Gurbachan Singh Randhawa is one of the most talented track athletes India has produced.
The flag bearer at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Gurbachan was the second Indian athlete to run in the final of an Olympic event. He finished fifth in the 110m hurdles in Tokyo.
Born at Nangli village in Amritsar, Punjab, on June 6, 1939, Gurbachan was a born sportsperson. He stsrted with decathlon -- comprising 10 different events of track and field, but later switched to 110m hurdles with an eye on olympic medal.
An alumnus of Khalsa College, Amritsar, Gurbachan won gold in decathlon in 1962 Asian Games and in Tokyo Olympics (1964) he competed in hurdles and made it to the finals, finishing 5th.
Tokyo was his second Olympics.
He was honoured with the Arjuna Award in 1961 thus becoming the first athlete from the country to get the award and with the Padma Shri in 2005.
