Have you ever wondered how a mermaid from the Joseon era could survive in the present-day city of Seoul? 🧜🏻♀️
The Legend of the Blue Sea shows us just that.
A 2017 South Korean drama starring Jun Ji-hyun and Lee Min-ho is a pleasure to watch thanks to its entertaining blend of romance, humour, adventure, and fantasy.
“A mermaid, Shim Cheong, starts following a conman, Joon-jae, who initially helps her out. However, while she tries to adapt to the human world, she finds herself falling in love with him.”
The story revolves around reincarnated star-crossed lovers and spans around two time periods: the Joseon timeline, which serves as a dramatic backdrop, and the contemporary time tale, which features more comedy and romance!
Shim Cheong is a beautiful mermaid that travels across oceans to Seoul after her crazy encounter with Joon-jae, a highly adept con artist who first becomes interested in her because of a $6 million jade bracelet.
She, however, gains deep affection for Joon-jae and decides to seek her one true love in this lifetime (mermaids can only fall in love once, fyi).
In the busy city of Seoul, she has nowhere else to go, so she is taken in by Joon Jae, who also finds his con accomplices hiding out in his home from a furious past victim of their frauds.
However, the situation becomes extremely dangerous when Joon Jae's stepmother hires a lethal killer named Ma Dae Young to murder him so that her own son is able to inherit Joon Jae's money.
We follow Shim Cheong as she tries to survive on land while simultaneously trying to protect Joon Jae from the perils that await him.
