Created sometime between 1500 and 1521 AD, during the final years of the Aztec empire, the Aztec Sun Stone was originally located in the main plaza of the ancient Aztec capital city, Tenochtitlan, which is now present-day Mexico City. It was discovered in 1790 during the renovation of the city's main cathedral and has since been preserved and displayed at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City
