This discussion has become a matter of pride. Humility has no place in it.
As Saint Augustine says it, “It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels”. So I think by this principle we should stay away from pride, and therefore this discussion.
I agree with you that this discussion is likely going nowhere. I would just reiterate the point I was attempting to make: the violence that has occurred on both sides is unacceptable. Period. There are hypocrites on both sides. However, in my view (which I acknowledge is biased, just like everyone’s), the reaction from the left - specifically lawmakers and the news media - over the BLM violence was far different from their reaction to the Capitol riots. To me, that indicates hypocrisy. And despite what some might say, I do not see how the reaction should be different, because the violence in both cases is wrong. Neither side is justified. Again, just calling balls and strikes as I seen them.
As far as healing goes, I don’t think it is likely we are going to see any miraculous healing over the next four years. Again, there were clearly no efforts made on that front over the past four. Just the opposite. The left made every possible attempt to delegitimize and undermine Trump’s presidency. Now they are preaching unity and healing while impeaching the president - for the second time. Dems and the media have done nothing but disparage Trump supporters and now they are demanding that people come together to worship Joe Biden. Don’t see it happening. Frankly, I think it’s extremely insulting. That said, as for me, I am willing to continue to discuss opinions and policy in a perfectly cordial manner, finding points of agreement when possible, but I will not be told by the media and others to be quiet and just get onboard. I don’t agree with the ideology or policy prescriptions of the left and will continue to make that known in a polite way. Just as many on the left have done over the last four years.
I’m glad we could freely express our views on this subject.
