The tomb is one of the most significant architectural typologies of the Mughal Empire. One such imposing tomb of the Mughal Emperor Akbar is located in Sikandra, the outskirts of Agra. Adhering to the Tartary tradition, Akbar designed his tomb during his reign itself. The monument was completed between 1605 to 1613 by his son Jahangir.
The massive 119 acres site with astonishing Charbagh gardens portray the Mughal's love for nature. The square complex with the tomb at the nucleus has four raised walkways radiating away towards the cardinal gates. The southern gate is the main entrance to the complex and the other three are false gates, built only for decoration. The gate stands upright with magnificent red sandstone and is decorated with designs using marble. The main gate with 4 minarets was inspired by the Charminar when Akbar visited Deccan in 1599. The three-storey minarets shimmer with a white marble appearance.
