Elderly parents are increasingly making a conscious choice to move into these facilities and spend their own money for happiness and well-being.
The Willingness to Spend on Oneself
Rakesh Dewan, at 68, is the Chairman of one of the largest manufacturers of household appliances in India, Home Appliances Company (HAC). Five years ago, he invested in a dwelling at Antara at the foothills of the Himalayas in Dehradun. Antara was established in 2012 as a super luxury senior citizen residential complex by Aniljit Singh, formerly of the Max Group of companies and is the brainchild of his daughter Tara Singh Vachani. Everything about it is seven-star luxury. It is spread over 14 acres in Purukul, Dehradun and was designed by Bradford Perkins, a pioneer in designing facilities that support independence with growing age. Perkins was partnered by a Spanish boutique design firm to add a sense of life and expand on the functionality provided by Perkins.
At the execution phase Integral Designs crafted the landscaping, Arcop Associates completed the residential spaces and Studio Lotus made the Club House the crown jewel of the community. All the dwelling units have one or more balconies facing the majestic Himalayas, and the entire complex has been planned and executed with meticulous care and detailing. Antara is manned by trained professional staff, with a hotelier as the General Manager. Courtesy, respect and personal attention to every resident is the hallmark of the caring attitude of the staff. As Rakesh says, the residents feel loved and wanted.
Rakesh furnished the apartment three years ago and began staying at Antara for a week or ten days every month. It was a welcome relief from the lockdown restrictions of COVID and a quantum leap into a pristine and healthy environment from the polluted and frenetic pace of life in Delhi. Air quality is an astounding 5 ppm at Antara almost on par with Switzerland. Rakesh and his wife, Kavita, drive down to Antara from Delhi in about 4 hours along beautiful roads.
