The workforce of tomorrow is evolving, as is how they view their careers.
Those recruiting them are yet to accept it!
The young joining the workforce today, contrary to popular belief, are NOT shying away from hard work.
But they are surely looking for smart work. A career/job means many things for them – exciting roles, responsibilities, money and above all, a good work environment, where they and their choices are respected.
Unfortunately, most people recruiting them neither got such an environment, nor have created one in their organizations
Hence the discontent.
The young student today doesn’t have a problem with 18 hour work days, but has a problem if all work days are 18 hours.
They don’t have a problem with travel, or official structures, but have a problem with unnecessary officialdom, like a 2 year bond or a 3 month notice period.
What motivates the new workforce is not just money or job security. Money is available in a lot of industries these days. Most people aren’t looking for job security, because it isn’t needed. Opportunities exist for good candidates
Companies need to understand this tectonic shift. Else attrition will be a reality, and soon companies with such expectations will start finding it tough to recruit the best talent. Companies that embrace this change will survive, while others will learn the hard way.
As someone who is either joining, or has just joined the workforce, what are you looking for in a job?
As someone who is hiring the new age workforce, what is it that you are doing to manage this change?
