“Theatre has given me a space to express myself. When I do theatre, I don’t just act, I breathe in the characters and I live through them.” She adds a soft chuckle to it and continues. It is interesting to live through these moments and wonder how these characters must have lived through them in real life. I don’t say it in vain when I say that I live through these characters, when I am performing, I try to bring in my real emotions. If in case it is a sad scene, I would usually go into memory lane and obsess over a sad memory until I can perform the scene well.
Theatre can be really powerful, stories are one of the most effective ways to reach the hearts of people and bring about change. And it was very evident when we had conducted a one-day theatre workshop at the National Association of blind. We had instructed the participants to express certain emotions. If the emotion to be expressed was “Roudra” or anger, we had asked everyone to frown which would further imply anger. Along with the basics of theatre, the participants who were mostly blind learned to improve their communication skills as well. It also showed me how powerful and transformative this art of theatre can be.
Theatre is of course the basics when it comes to any kind of career in the domain of the performing arts. Whether it be the movies or any other kind of acting gig, theatre forms the base. This is of course why we need to make sure that we give the theatre the due importance and credit it deserves. I absolutely love going to watch a good play and witnessing the magic unfold.
I would suggest for people who are passionate about theatre to come together and form groups who could maybe conduct performances in old age homes or other such institutions. This way, you could rope in more people to find their passion in theatre and you could help make one day of these less fortunate ones good as well. It is the least we can do.”
