Ferritin is a protein that stores iron . Ferritin is related to both hair loss and hair growth . Let me explain .
- Low ferritin causes hair loss (especially in women) and OPTIMAL levels encourage more growth in both males and females . Low levels are associated with androgenic alopecia (AA) , alopecia aerate and telogen loss . Basically , low ferritin = less hair ! You don't need to be anemic to
benefit from iron .
First step - see your doctor for a blood test (complete blood count , hemoglobins , blood iron levels AND ferritin) . You may need to specifically ask for ferritin as most doctors overlook this .
Note also that hemoglobin below 140 g/L can lead to hair loss . Hemoglobins carries oxygen for cell growth and repair , including cells for hair growth . Before taking iron supplements talk to your doctor , as too much of the wrong form of iron can be dangerous .
Low ferritin also affects the QUALITY of your hair - it can lead to structural changes , dryness and breakage .
If your doctor approves iron supplements for you take with vitamin C for better absorption and apart from tea , calcium and magnesium !
