England internationals Eric Brook, Sam Cowan, Jackie Bray, Frank Swift, and Fred Tilson, as well as former Scotland captain Jimmy McMullan, were on the team when Herd joined for Manchester City. His City debut occurred in a 1-0 loss against Blackpool. Herd's first goal for City helped City defeat Derby County 2-1.

He was also a member of the City squad that lost to Everton in the 1933 FA Cup Final by a score of 3-0.
