Toyota is taking a step towards electrification with the introduction of a mild-hybrid diesel powertrain in the 2024 Hilux. Initially set to launch in Europe by mid-2024, the electrified Hilux features a familiar 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engine coupled with a 48V mild-hybrid system. The mild-hybrid setup, incorporating a single motor, adds 16 bhp of power and 65 Nm torque to enhance the vehicle's efficiency.
The 2024 Hilux Hybrid boasts a 5% improvement in fuel efficiency compared to its non-hybrid counterpart, attributed to an enhanced start-stop system and a reduction in the diesel engine's idle rpm. The mild-hybrid system's battery is placed under the rear seats, following a belt-integrated starter-generator configuration.
Toyota emphasizes the off-road capabilities of the Hilux Hybrid, featuring the Multi-Terrain Select system with six off-road driving modes. The regenerative braking system contributes to an improved hill descent control response on steep terrains. The pickup maintains its water-wading capacity of 700mm, towing capability of 3500 kg, and a 1000 kg maximum payload capacity.
While the launch in Europe is scheduled for mid-2024, the introduction in other markets is expected to follow in a phased manner. Although the official mileage figures and pricing details are yet to be disclosed, Toyota aims to bring more power and efficiency to the Hilux with its mild-hybrid system, signaling a move towards electrification in the automotive landscape.
