Many traditional instruments, like the Dhul and Pepa, have survived the test of time despite the rapid advancement of technology. They are a significant part of Assamese cultural heritage that help preserve traditions. Their unique sound and authenticity continue to captivate music lovers in Assam and worldwide.
Speaking to G Plus, Lankeshwar Kalita, the owner of Galaxy Music in Guwahati, said the sale of traditional instruments increased this year in comparison to 2022. "This year our percussion instruments are seeing a rise in their sale. Five-six Dhuls are being sold every day now," Kalita said.
The rate of bor dhul ranges from ₹4,000 to ₹8,000. Meanwhile, Juria Pepa cost around ₹2,500 to ₹3000 while the Gutia Pepa rates are much cheaper at around ₹1,500 to ₹2,000.
Kalita said, "We have a lot of distributors across the city in places like Gandhibasti."
Kalita further added that the sale of Assamese traditional instruments including dhul, pepa, gogona, has seen a spike in this bihu season. "On daily basis, acoustic guitars and harmoniums are sold more here. But since it’s Bihu season, the sale of dhul, pepa, kakoi, gogona, toka are seen more," he said.
Speaking about manufacturing units of the indigenous instruments, Kalita said, "Our dhuls are manufactured in different parts of the state like Barpeta, Morigaon, Jagiroad, Nagaon etc. Apart from that, it is also made in West Bengal. Our leather instruments are mostly made in Barpeta and Morigaon."
Another vendor of the popular Rajgarh store, Haran Das, who has been making Dhuls for 20 years now, said there has been sizeable demand for 'bor dhuls' this Bihu season. "Earlier, dhuls were bigger than now. Now that, it's bihu season, the sale of bor dhuls have increased," he said.
He further added, "In a month, at least 20-30 dhuls are sold here in our shop. "Many famous artists come here to buy Dhuls from us. We have also sold bor Dhuls to a lot of dhulias (performers). Besides that, we also sell tablas."
