What happens when your sense of humour gets you your death warrant? Let’s see what Triboulet, one of the most beloved court jesters, does when his humour lands him in a right spot.
It was during the reign of Francis I, that he made the most harrowing mistake that almost cost him his neck. To lighten the mood, he slapped Francis I's butt in front of the court. This angered him so much, he threatened to execute the jester. But he was lenient, telling Triboulet he could get away if he made a more insulting excuse than the deed. To this, Triboulet said he mistook him for the Queen.
But the Queen was the only person in the court who was completely off-limits. This just warranted his execution. However considering Triboulet's long term of servitude he offered him the choice of how he wanted to die.
Triboulet’s quick use of wit saved him. He chose old age as his preferred way of dying. The king could not back on his words.
