The former US president has been accused of trying to change the results of the 2020 US election. An indictment states that Donald Trump is accused of conspiring to prevent Congress from confirming Joe Biden's victory in the election.
The 45-page indictment also charged Trump with conspiring to deprive voters of their right to participate in fair elections.
In this indictment, Trump is accused of trying to pressure Mike Pence, then Vice President, to change the outcome of the 2020 election by using the crowd of his supporters who had gathered in Washington DC.
The most serious charge raised in this indictment could bring Trump a 20-year prison sentence, although the final sentence may change based on various factors and the judge's discretion.
The grand jury in Trump's impeachment trial asked him to appear in a Washington courthouse on Thursday for an arraignment hearing.
The prosecutors of this investigation have said that Trump made the allegation of election fraud while knowing it to be false. They also said that Trump pressured a number of US officials, including the then-vice president, to change the results of the election and ultimately, in a "desperate" effort, instigated the January 6 storm on the Capitol.
Prosecutors have said that Trump's claims were false and that he knew they were "lies."
The indictment states that senior advisers, including US intelligence officials, repeatedly assured Trump that the election results were "legitimate".
These allegations are based on the investigation of the special counsel Jack Smith into the allegations against Trump. He wrote in a statement that the attack by Trump supporters on the Congress building on January 6, 2021, was an attack on the "headquarters of American democracy." Smith added that the attack was fueled by "accused (Trump's) lies."
