Hormones are chemicals in the blood that tell your body how to function.
Why should you know about them?
Because hormones regulate almost every crucial bodily process. If something's wrong, your hormones have the answer! There are different types of hormones in the body and all of them have unique functions. The proper regulation of hormones is necessary for good health. Check your hormone levels to discover any potential issues before they occur, or to find explanations for current health problems.
These are some essential hormones;
1 Estrogen (Estradiol) is a major female sex hormone and it's involved in regulating menstrual cycles.
2 Prolactin is a reproductive hormone, involved in processes like the development of mammary glands in the breast tissue of women.
3 Testosterone is an androgen in both men and women. In females, it is quickly converted to estrogen, while it remains as testosterone in men.
4 Progesterone prepares the uterus for pregnancy in case of fertilization. It stimulates testosterone in men.
5 Follicle Stimulating Hormone is involved in sexual development of men & women. It stimulates egg production in the ovaries and in men, it helps to regulate spermatogenesis.
6 Luteinising Hormone plays an important role in stimulating testosterone release in men and regulating ovulation in women.
TESTING GUIDELINES;
When getting your hormones tested, keep these pointers in mind;
- Fasting is not required for hormone tests.
- The best day to test estradiol is the 15th day of a 28-day period cycle. For progesterone, between day 14 to day 26.
