On the face of it, Arsenal fans could be forgiven for entering February disappointed.
High-profile pursuits of big-money targets Caicedo and Mudryk both ended in failure.
Was this however a successful window for Arteta’s side?
Let’s start with Trossard. Arsenal fans wanted a top class attacker to push them over the line in the title race. Is Trossard this? Possibly not, but neither is Mudryk. Mudryk’s talent is unquestionable, however in terms of impact in this campaign, would the best part of £100m on an inexperienced and unproven player who may need adaption time really be sensible? £27m Trossard is proven in the Premier League and a much better value signing for immediate impact. Additionally, Trossard will be less likely to hinder the development of Gabriel Martinelli. Having two young players fighting for the same minutes would like hamper one players development, if not both. Trossard does not need development minutes.
Similarly Jorginho - despite Edu wasting considerable time chasing Caicedo who was immediately declared ‘not for sale’, a last-minute pivot to Jorginho may be good business. Jorginho is not a like-for-like Partey replacement, but he is an alternative. There were justified fears of another aging player on a costly and length contract weighing on the club’s finances, however, £12m for an experienced winner from a big-6 rival on a 1.5 year deal? That sounds like a good deal. Jorginho is a short-term filler which allows Arsenal to revert to their main targets once they become available.
And lastly Kiwior. £21m for a talented and versatile young player who can provide depth in multiple positions? It’s hard to argue against that being a smart move.
These signings also allowed much needed loan moves for the likes of Marquinhos and Lokonga, hopefully allowing them to develop over the remainder of the campaign.
All this while main rivals Manchester City signed only a young midfielder, and arguably weakened their squad by allowing Joao Cancelo to leave.
It may not have been the window fans dreamt of, but I think Arsenals title chances have certainly gone up.
