Hi
People who criticise new technologies are derisively called Luddites.
The term is an insult that implies that those against technological change are ignorant or irrational.
But this time it's different.
In the past, tech progress was about minimising physical effort. Machines were made do manual tasks while humans controlled the machines with their congnitive abilities.
When physical labour was automated, service jobs emerged that required skills that humans possesed but machines didn't: learning, communicating, etc.
But now, generative AI is changing all that.
Chatbots like chatGPT are beginning to outperform humans in more and more of these cognitive skills.
And there isn't a third field of activity beyond physical and cognitive where humans have an edge.
The original Luddites were members of a 19th-century movement of English textile workers, and the main thing they were protesting was falling workers' wages at a time when factory owners' profits were rising.
We are at a similar phase: Tech moguls, those who control this AI tech, are billionaires on one hand. While you, on the other, may not have a job in a few years.
We are all Luddites now.
