Life in western Afghanistan is a daily battle against numerous challenges, but recent powerful earthquakes have brought an added layer of despair to the region. A series of devastating tremors, including a magnitude-6.3 earthquake and strong aftershocks, have left an indelible mark. These seismic events have claimed over 2,500 lives and affected more than 11,000 people, according to the United Nations Humanitarian Coordination Office (OCHA).

The initial earthquake wreaked havoc in Herat, destroying at least 11 villages, with ongoing rescue operations to find survivors. The Taliban administration reports a severe death toll and thousands injured.

International aid efforts are in motion, with the UN allocating $5 million for emergency aid. However, the extensive damage suggests that more help will be required, especially in remote areas.
