When one or both partners have experienced sexual abuse or sexual assault, many couples finds it hard to overcome. An experience of sexual abuse does not automatically mean that sex, sexual intimacy and sexual enjoyment will be difficult. Sometimes, however, sexual abuse can impact on partner’s sexual relationship, and require some working through.
But don't worry ! Here are some tips ;
1 Create a Safe Space - Foster an environment where both partners feel safe to express their thoughts, fears, and boundaries without judgment or pressure.
2 Open Dialogue - Encourage open conversations about triggers, boundaries, and comfort levels related to intimacy. Use "I" statements to express feelings and needs.
3 Consent and Communication - Prioritize clear consent and ongoing communication during intimate moments. Establish a system for checking in and ensuring comfort.
4 Educate Yourself - Learn about the effects of trauma and how it may impact intimacy and relationships. Understand that healing takes time and varies for each survivor.
5 Slow Progression - Take things at a pace that's comfortable for both partners. Gradually explore intimacy and physical closeness, respecting each other's boundaries.
6 Non-Sexual Intimacy - Focus on building emotional intimacy through non-sexual activities that foster connection, trust, and comfort.
Pro tip - Every survivor's experience is unique, so open communication and mutual respect are key to finding the best strategies for enhancing sexual communication and connection in your specific relationship.
