SpongeBob SquarePants is an American animated television series created by broadcaster, marine biologist, and animator Stephen Hillenburg. The series tells adventures and stories about the main character, SpongeBob, and his friends in a fictional underwater city in the Pacific Ocean called “Group Bottom.” The popularity of this series made it a sought-after franchise by the media, as well as being the highest-rated show on a television channel called Nickelodeon, and one of the most animated on the channel called Pinktoons. The most widely distributed property is MTV Television Networks (the parent company). This media franchise earned $8 billion in promotional revenue for Nickelodeon. The idea of designing the character of SpongeBob came to Hillenburg in 1984 while studying marine biology at the Ocean Institute, Dana Point, California, USA, where he wrote a scenario for the intertidal zone in which he embodied figures. Marine life, including SpongeBob. Hillenburg left the institute to become a broadcaster in 1987, and then joined the California Institute of the Arts in 1992.
He began developing SpongeBob as a television series in 1996 after the cancellation of a series called “Rocco’s Modern Life.” The matter was transferred to a person named Tom Kenny, who worked with Hillenburg on developing the series, to voice the main character in it. “SpongeBob” was originally called “SpongeBoy,” and the series was called “SpongeBoy Ahoy,” but those names were changed because that name was given to a floor mop.
