The House committee investigating the attack on the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, recommended on Thursday that Congress consider barring former President Donald Trump from ever holding public office again as a result of his role in inciting that day's insurgency.

The committee issued its final, 800-plus-page report late Thursday, along with a list of 11 recommendations to prevent another attack on the United States Capitol.

Among the proposals are changes to the Electoral Count Act to clarify that a vice president does not have the authority to reject electoral slates submitted by states; a broadening of federal law enforcement agencies' scrutiny of extremist groups, including white nationalists and violent anti-government groups; and the designation of the counting of electoral votes by Congress every four years as a "National Special Security Event," similar to inaugurals and the State of the Union address.

The committee assembled evidence from thousands of documents and more than 1,000 witness interviews in eight chapters to argue that Trump orchestrated a plan to stay in office despite his election loss, pressuring state officials, the Justice Department, and his own vice president to assist him. Finally, the committee claims, he incited his followers to commit violence in his name.
