The movie talks very scathingly against consumerist culture. We have all become prisoners in our lives - chasing after the next trendy thing even though we'd be perfectly fine without it. We judge our worth (and others') by their wealth, by the things they own, and then slowly destroy ourselves by making comparisons.
Throughout the movie, Tyler Durden emphasizes on how the things we own ultimately own us, and that we need to break free of this cycle before it's too late. A person is not defined by how much they earn or what they own. We are who we choose to be, and freedom lies in being yourself.
