Mesut Ozil left Real Madrid to join Arsenal in 2013. The attacking midfielder was loved and cherished by the Madrid faithful but Ancelotti wanted to abolish the CAM position and hence the player had to leave. But if he had stayed would Real Madrid have gone on to win 4 UCLs in 5 years?
Gareth Bale was signed just days before Mesut Özil's departure. At the Welshman's presentation, fans were heard chanting "Don't sell Ozil". However, their pleas fell on deaf ears as Real Madrid president Florentino Perez sold the German in the same window, maybe to replenish the funds.
Bale soon became the "number two" at Madrid behind Ronaldo, but would this have been the case if Ozil had stayed? The German shared a wonderful partnership and Ronaldo and the Portuguese international himself criticized the decision and was reportedly furious after the club sold Ozil.
Luka Modric would have been the player who would have been the most affected if Mesut Ozil was retained! Having signed for Madrid in 2012, the Croatian was rated the "worst signing of the summer" in Spain after a horrible 12/13 season. But after Carlo Ancelotti arrived, he changed the formation to have two central midfielders and a defensive midfielder, playing a 4-3-3 instead of the 4-2-3-1 that Jose Mourinho had organised, hence giving Luka Modric a lifeline.
If you ask me, I would have preferred if Özil had stayed! Real Madrid could have done wonders if the German played behind the BBC. What are your thoughts on this, let me know...
