Histrionic personality disorder is a part of a greater group of psychological disorders which belongs to "Cluster B" personality disorders. Disorders in this category causes a person to be overly dramatic, emotional or erratic.
Those with HPD have a distorted mental image of themselves. Their self esteem is based on the approval of others. This creates a need for them to be noticed. Due to this people with HOD may resort to dramatic antics.
How to recognize the signs of Histrionic Personality Disorder
HPD, unlike other mental disorders, its not a devastating one. Those with HPD can function well in the society and at work. Those with HPD have great people skills. Unfortunately they often use these skills to manipulate other people.
According to the DSM 5th Edition, those with HPD have at least of 5 of the following symptoms:
• Uncomfortable in situations where they are not the center of attention.
• Interactions with others is characterized by inappropriate sexually seductive or provocative behaviour.
• Rapid shifting and shallow expression of emotions.
• Uses their physical attention to draw attention to themselves.
• A style of speech which is excessively impressionistic and lacks detail.
• Displays self dramatisation, theatricality and exaggerated expression of emotion.
• Find relationships to be more intimate than they actually are.
