The CBI on Monday arrested two Trinamool Congress ministers in West Bengal in the Narada bribery case at a time when the second wave of Covid-19 is ravaging the state that saw the surge in coronavirus cases due to the rallies and roadshows during the just-concluded assembly elections.
Apart from two ministers Firhad Hakim and Subrata Mukherjee, the CBI also arrested Trinamool legislator Madan Mitra and former party leader Sovan Chatterjee who had joined the BJP only to resign from it in March this year.
A furious West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee later landed at the CBI office in Kolkata and dared the agency to arrest her also.
The arrests came soon after the Trinamool Congress won a landslide victory in the recent assembly elections, humiliating the BJP that had run an aggressive poll campaign with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah leading from the front.
The CBI move has further escalated the ongoing tussle between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress erupted due to the post-poll violence in the state.
Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has visited post-poll violence affected areas of Cooch Behar and Nandigram despite a stiff opposition by the state government.
The Trinamool Congress has alleged that Dhankhar is violating the constitutional provisions by ignoring the advice of the state government.
Banerjee too had written to Dhankhar claiming that his visits would be "violative of the long-standing norms as evolved over several decades" and urged him to desist from "abrupt decisions" with regards to field visits that followed a call from the Prime Minister to the Governor.
Political analysts claimed that the central government and the BJP are provoking this confrontation as they are unable to digest the poll drubbing at the hands of Banerjee.
They said BJP has failed to digest it's humiliating defeat and is not only trying to take revenge but also diverting public attention from its failure in handling the Covid.
The Governor, who had sanctioned action though a state assembly Speaker has to clear the prosecution of legislators, said he had the authority to do so.
Surprisingly, Trinamool turncoats Mukul Roy and Suvendu Adhikari have been let off so far.
