What are the first things that comes to your mind when I say Bengali? I can guarantee you, one of them is going to be fish. I mean do I even need to explain Bengali's love of fish. We are literally Macche Bhate
Bangali (surviving on fish and rice). Even our ghosts crave fish. In Bengali mythology, there are various types
of supernatural beings or spirits known as “Bhoots” that are believed to have a fondness for fish. These
Bhoots are often associated with water bodies and are said to be attracted to the smell and taste of fish.
Mecho Bhoot is a ghost or spirit that specifically haunts rivers, ponds, and other water bodies. It is believed to have a strong affinity for fish and is known to consume or steal fish from fishermen or
individuals who venture near the water.
Jal Bhoot translates to “Water Ghost” in English. This type of Bhoot is said to reside in rivers, lakes, and other water sources. It is often depicted as a malevolent spirit that appears as a ghostly figure or a
floating head, and it is associated with fish and water-related activities.
Shoshur Bhoot refers to the spirit of the father-in-law. According to Bengali folklore, it is believed that
the spirit of a deceased father-in-law may visit his daughter-in-law’s home during certain auspicious occasions or rituals. It is customary to offer fish and other food items to the Shoshur Bhoot as a way to
appease and honor the departed spirit.
Petni is a very popular female ghost or spirit commonly found in Bengali folklore. While not directly associated with fish, it is believed that Petni has an intense craving for fish. In legends, Petni is often
depicted as a beautiful woman who lures fishermen or unsuspecting individuals towards the water bodies, where she then reveals her true form and drags them underwater.
So these are our Bhoots who are as much obsessed with fish as we are. And honestly, I’m proud of them, because you cannot leave behind your essence of Bangaliyana even after you die.
