भारत ने अंग्रेजों की हुक़ूमत से साढ़े सात दशक पहले आज़ादी पा ली थी। लेकिन क्या इस देश की लड़कियाँ और औरतें आज़ाद हैं? आज तक उन्हें अपनी ज़िंदगी से जुड़े अहम फ़ैसले लेने की आज़ादी नहीं है। उनके बाहर आने जाने पर रोक लगाई जाती है, उन्हें पढ़ाया लिखाया नहीं जाता है, और ना ही उन्हें अपना पेश या जीवन साथी चुनने की अनुमति दी जाती है।

India gained freedom from colonial rule seven and a half decades ago. But are young girls and women free in this country? Even today girls do not enjoy the freedom to make their own life decisions. Their mobility is strictly restricted and monitored, they’re not allowed to study beyond a certain level, they’re not allowed to choose their profession or even their life partners. Here are six young women from Uttar Pradesh who reflect on the meaning of freedom for them and for others in the society.

According to an UDAYA survey, only 47% unmarried girls and 28% married girls enjoy the freedom to walk around unescorted as opposed to 98% boys. Only 10% of girls have the freedom to choose their life partner, while 28% enjoy the freedom.
