The last time the Serie A champions were defeated at home by a large margin was 26 years ago, and AC Milan's humiliating 5-2 loss to Sassuolo was one of their all-time lows.
The Rossoneri lost four Serie A points, were eliminated from the Coppa Italia, and suffered a crushing defeat in the Supercoppa in the span of ten days. They now fall 12 points behind the leaders, Napoli, in the title race.
But what is happening to AC Milan after winning the Serie A title last season?
Unsurprisingly, AC Milan had a good start to the year. After all, 2022 had treated them well. They achieved their first Scudetto since 2011 in May. Then, by making it to this season's Champions League knockout round, they reclaimed their position among Europe's elite.
But it's become obvious that something is wrong at Milan with just over a month left before their round of 16 match with Tottenham. In fact, if it weren't for Juventus' terrible week, the Rossoneri would undoubtedly be dubbed Serie A's crisis team right now by the restless Italian media.
After all, Stefano Pioli's team lost four points in the race for the championship, was eliminated by Torino from the Coppa Italia, and was then destroyed 3-0 by Inter in the Supercoppa Italiana.
Mike Maignan didn't win Milan the league last season on his own, but he had a significant impact. In 32 Serie A appearances, the Frenchman kept 17 clean sheets and allowed just 21 goals. Unbelievably, he actually outperformed Gigi Donnarumma, who infamously defected to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2021.
However, following Maignan's injury, Ciprian Tatarusanu simply doesn't offer the same quality or instill the same level of confidence in those in front of him, and he is allowing shots to go in that should be routine saves.
