In therapy, nothing is off limits. However, sometimes people find it hard to communicate, they find it hard tk know what to say. Some common topics or reflecting on why a person has chosen to seek therapy can be a good start.
A person can talk about whatever they want in therapy as there are no strict rules on what is appropriate to discuss.
With that said, different therapists may yse different ways to direct the conversation, it depends on what preferred style and the form of therapy. Some would encourage free association that means thinking of whatever comes through the mind, while others may want tk focus on a particular issue. The client always has the final say on what they feel comfortable talking about.
Possible topics
If a person is not sure, the following subjects could be a good starting point:
• How is the clients day or week is going.
• How are they feeling right now.
• What happening currently in their household or family.
• Any difficult recent moments or ongoing situations.
Starting through with these topics can be enough to get the conversation going. However, if there's a silence, that's also okay. Sometimes, silences can provide therapists with helpful information or even allow the clients mind to wander onto topics they did not even know they wanted to discuss.
