With violence continuing in the North Eastern state of Manipur, last night nine people were killed amid incidents of firing and arson in the Aigjang village.
This is the largest casualty in a single incident in the continuing incidents of violence in the state in the past few weeks.
Among all the people killed, a woman was also killed. Several of those injured have been rushed to Imphal for treatment. Some of those killed in violence have cut marks on their bodies and multiple bullet injuries, the sources said.
The incident comes as a major setback amid efforts to restore peace in the state, which has been tense for over a month now due to ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities. The relaxation of the curfew has been restricted after last night's incident.
The ethnic clashes in Manipur have claimed about 100, left many more injured and displaced thousands.
The ongoing unrest began after tribal bodies' protest marches against a move to grant Scheduled Tribes status to the majority Meities.
Currently, 11 out of 16 districts of Manipur are under curfew. Internet has been suspended across the state to prevent rumours from fuelling violence
