The chemical which are permanent and semi permanent hair dyes are not highly toxic. Research is limited, but it shows that its safe to colour your hair while being pregnant.
There are some studies which have found that very high doses of the chemical in the hair dyes has a possibility of causing harm. However, the doses are massive compared with the very low amount of chemicals that you may be exposed to while colouring your hair.
Using hair dye when you're pregnant
You could decide to wait to dye your hair after the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, as the risk of chemical substances which could harm your baby is much lower. If you're preferring to colour your hair by yourself, you can reduce the risk of further by making sure that you:
• Wear gloves
• Keep the dye for minimum time
• Do it in a well ventilated room
• Wash your scalp as the dye is applied
By putting the dye on the strands of the hair aka highlighting also reduces the risk. The chemicals used are only absorbed by your hair, and not by your scalp or bloodstream.
Semi permanent pure vegetable dyes like henna, indigo are some safe alternatives.
Remember that pregnancy could affect your hair's normal condition.
• Which reacts differently to colouring or perming than it usually does
• Becoming less or more absorbent, frizzy or unpredictable
It's always a better idea to start with the strand test first using the hair dye or treatment you untend to use. So ask your hairdresser for advice prior.
