G. Madhavan Nair, born on October 31, 1943, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is a distinguished Indian space scientist. He started his journey in space science after graduating in Engineering from Kerala University in 1966 and training at Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC). He joined Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS) in 1967, progressing through various roles to become the Chairman of ISRO.
During his six-year tenure as Chairman, ISRO, he oversaw 25 successful missions, including CHANDRAYAAN-1 and OCEANSAT-2. He also championed initiatives for futuristic technologies and societal applications like tele-education, telemedicine, and Village Resource Centres. Under his guidance, over 31,000 classrooms connected through EDUSAT and telemedicine services expanded to 315 hospitals, benefiting rural communities.
As Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre, he contributed to indigenous cryogenic technology development. Later, at VSSC, he led the successful launch of GSLV and low-cost access to space initiatives. He continues to shape ISRO's future plans, emphasizing scientific exploration and international cooperation while aiming to bring space technology's benefits to all segments of society.
