The Outer Space Treaty says no one can own territory on the moon.
But it turns out you can actually lay claim to portions of the moon where you have landed, thanks to a loophole called safety zones under the Artemis Accords. If a country manages to set up a landing pad or any infrastructure, others are expected to keep their distance from that spot in the interest of safety.
This allows a country (or even a company) to effectively claim that real estate.
What time is it on the moon?
Chandrayaan-3 is planned to land on the Moon around 6:04 pm IST. But what time will it be on the moon?
No one knows.
On Earth, we use a 24-hour day, based on the planet’s rotation and cycles of light and dark.
But the moon rotates much more slowly -- every 29.5 Earth days. The cues we use on Earth -- sunrise, sunset, etc -- are no longer there.
There is no such thing as a moon standard time. But scientists are working to develop a system of setting the time on the moon wrapped up in navigation and communication systems.
