It is abhorrent that the government at times such as this, allows vaccine manufacturers to go ahead and put out slab rates to earn super profits when they're already profiting off of the ₹140 per dose that they charge the govt. By doubling prices for the general population and private players, they make the situation problematic on many levels.
Firstly, vaccines are a global good. It is in the best interests of everyone to adhere to maximising universalisation because a positive case anywhere is a threat to everywhere else. No other country in the world has put out prices for ordinary citizens to purchase vaccines except for perhaps Russia.
Secondly, this relegates state responsibility because now 50% of all vaccine supplies will have to be fought between state and private players like hospitals while the govt effectively only has to freely vaccinate 30% of the population
Thirdly, many of these vaccinations were developed with public funds. Oxford AstreZeneca was developed with 97% public funding and Bharat Bioshield was first isolated in the National Institute of Virology, Pune. If the public has already paid for these goods via tax, why is it liable to pay again?
It is morally reprehensible that election campaigns such as the one embarked in West Bengal by the BJP are promising free vaccines when the central government has Already! Been elected to serve the interests of the nation as a whole
