Gael Monfils would not take further part in the French Open 2023 due to a wrist injury that has been bothering him for quite some time. Monfils won his first-round match against Sebastian Baez on Court Philippe-Chatrier, but ended up aggravating the injury on his left wrist.
It was the same injury due to which he retired from the Miami Open earlier this year. The veteran said that as per the advice of the doctor, he cannot afford to carry on and play at Roland Garros.
"Actually, physically, I'm quite fine. I was quite happy this morning. I woke up quite good, but I had the problem with my wrist that I cannot solve. Felt it during the match, actually the whole match [yesterday]. And unfortunately, even [though] we pushed it 'til tonight, just came back again for another exam, and yes, waited a little bit," Monfils was quoted as saying to the reporters in a press conference.
"The doctor said [it] was not good to play with that type of injury. Yesterday was actually very risky, and then today definitely said I should stop," Monfils said.
Gael Monfils hopeful of returning on grass
Monfils, however, said that he should be up and running for the grass-court season. He also said that he is not sure about the extent of his wrist injury.
"I think had it been totally broken it would have been more serious, but it's partial. So I'll know more about the length of time when I'm off the courts. But the doctor said he hopes I'll be able to play on grass," he added.
After Monfils pulled out, young sensation Holger Rune advanced to the Round 3 after getting a walkover in his second-round match.
Monfils was also sidelined until March after he injured his right foot last month. The Frenchman, who is married to Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina, is currently ranked No.394 in the world and was playing in his 16th French Open.
