Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is caused by an overgrowth of harmful bacteria in the vaginal microbiome. Sex can play a role in triggering this imbalance, however it's important to note that it is not an a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI.)
There are four main reasons why someone may develop BV after engaging in sexual activity;
1 Introduction of new bacteria - Sexual activity can introduce new and potentially harmful bacteria into the vagina. These new bacteria can outnumber and displace the beneficial bacteria (mainly lactobacilli), leading to BV. Everyone has a unique microbiome-some more compatible than others. New partners can also introduce new bacteria during intercourse.
2 Change in vaginal pH - Semen has a pH of 7.2-7.4 meaning that it is alkaline, and when it comes into contact with the acidic environment of the vagina, it can alter its pH. A more alkaline vaginal ph can make it easier for harmful bacteria to thrive and multiply, causing BV. Different parts of the menstrual cycle can also naturally alter the vaginal pH.
3 Sharing or using sex toys - Part of sexual expression can be exploring and trying new things-like a variety of sex toys. If sexual toys are shared or not cleaned properly between uses, they can introduce or spread bacteria. Thankfully, promptly cleaning sex toys after use is a simple way to mitigate this risk.
4 Use of certain sexual products - Certain lubricants or spermicides that contain harsh ingredients and scents might disrupt the natural bacterial environment of the vagina, making it more susceptible to BV. Finding the right products that work for you should include seeking accurate information.
Tips to prevent BV after sex;
• Use protection such as condoms
• Always pee after sex to flush out any bacteria that may have been pushed up during intercourse
• Opt for lube with safe ingredients
• Always clean your sex toys
• Take Prebiotic+Probiotic and D-Mannose+Cranberry to prevent vaginal infections from occurring
• Practice personal hygiene before and after sex to avoid introducing harmful bacteria
