Few days back Indian Cricket Team former Captain and ex BCCI President Saurav Ganguly made a bizarre statement and said, "Winning the IPL is more difficult than winning a World Cup as there are 14 matches after which you take part in the playoffs."
Though Ganguly made this statement to defend Test Captain Rohit Sharma's captaincy but if it's so difficult than why everybody was blaming IPL for India's loss in World Test Final 2023 against Australia?
Wasn't it a more important match for the country than the IPL?
Now for the upcoming India-West Indies tour there has been some controversy and also surprises for the Test line-up.
The two-Test series marks the beginning of India's campaign at the next World Test Championship cycle, and it was expected as a transition phase in Indian cricket.
Young and fresh faces were expected to travel to the Caribbean but unfortunately some consistent and experienced domestic players like Abhimanyu Easwaran and Sarfaraz Khan weren't selected for the upcoming tour.
Though India picked other well-performing though less-experienced batters like Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal for West Indies.
Abhimanyu Easwaran's snub, alongside Test call-ups to Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer without them having enough recent Ranji Trophy experience, has only raised questions about whether IPL is now an important criterion for Test selections.
A few 'non-cricketing' reasons have emerged behind Sarfaraz's snub, with apparent 'fitness and off-field conduct' issues being cited.
But is our Test Captain himself the fittest?
Sharma himself is under scrutiny for his poor form at the top of the order.
What's really sad to see inspite of everything one thing that hasn’t changed, the continued ignorance of domestic talents who perform year after year to stake a claim in India’s red-ball squad.
Players like Abhimanyu Easwaran and Sarfaraz Khan, who time and now has given brilliant performances.
The men's domestic cricket was supposedly the backbone of Indian cricket but with time and again it is ending up getting shorter, and the IPL window keep getting longer.
Why our selectors not prioritizing our domestic players when they know they have a pool of talent and experience unlike IPL players.
