In this modern day, many are aware of e-waste. But very few are aware of the ill effects of e-waste. E-waste can cause serious health issues due to the presence of lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, polybrominated flame retardants, barium and lithium which can also pollute water and soil.
The recycling methods of e-waste in developing countries are unsophisticated. The recycling methods in developed countries are more complex and better. Since most of the consumers aren't aware of e-waste, it mostly end up in the bin. Most of the e-waste in turn end up in landfill, polluting the environment. With regard to our country, there is a lack of e-waste drop off points. The limited access, living in a place far from the e-waste recycling points are few of the reasons for overlooking of e-waste. Less than 20•/• of all the cell phones are recycled. Around 75•/• of the cell phones are not even discarded properly. 53.6 Metric tons of e-waste was generated in the year 2019. With all these alarming data, it is obvious that e-waste is overlooked.
It is necessary that few measures are taken by the government of the country, to set up more recycling points and make everyone aware of the ill effects of the e-waste. A guidance must be given to the citizens, specifying the proper way of disposal. By purchasing second hand electronics, repairing instead of throwing away, finding a responsible recyler are just few methods of contributing to the ecosystem.
