Manchester United were linked with Frenkie de Jong all summer but were unable to sign the Dutchman. Erik Ten Hag knows the player well from his days at Ajax and the player was part of the side that took Ajax to the semi-finals of the Champions League. Barcelona were and are still going through a financial crisis and it was reported an agreement between the clubs was reached, however, the player was not too keen on the move.
The fact United were not competing in the Champions League was said to be a major factor why the move did not materialize. Erik Ten Hag’s side recently knocked Barcelona out of the Europa League and the Dutchman played in both legs. It is rather amusing for fans that the player turned the club down for not competing in the Champions League when Barcelona themselves have not qualified.
Erik Ten Hag has done a fantastic job in his first year at United and it is certain the club will back him in the summer, regardless of the owners. De Jong was his top target last summer and after he failed to get him, United strengthened their midfield with the additions of Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, and recently Marcel Sabitzer. One of the reasons United have improved so much this year is because of the stronger options in midfield.
Bruno Fernandes has returned to form and has been magnificent this season. Scott Mctominay and Fred are now squad players but both players have to improved greatly since last season. One may argue that United do not need De Jong as their midfield seems to be okay for the first time in years. However, the club should still go in for him this summer.
