It was a magnificent day for the Indian cricket team as they won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and met Prime Minister Narendra Modi after returning from Barbados on Thursday, July 4.
Rohit Sharma and Co. along with their families and Indian journalists were stuck in Barbados after the final due to Hurricane Beryl.
PM Modi's special gesture with the trophy went viral in no time and grabbed several eyeballs. While posing with the team, PM Modi didn't touch the trophy, instead held Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid's hands. In the picture, Dravid and Rohit could be seen holding the trophy using one hand each while PM Modi was seen holding their hands.
PM Modi's incredible gesture as a mark of respect for the team and the trophy was lauded by fans. While no clear reason is known, it can be said that PM Modi knows his contribution to winning the trophy is unknown and hence, he decided to stay out of it and just cheered for the squad instead. Not only this but as an unsaid rule, trophies and medals won by teams and individuals are supposed to be touched only by those who have won them.
Along with the players and India's outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah and President Roger Binny also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During the meeting, Shah and Binny gifted a special 'Namo 1' jersey to PM Modi.
BCCI took to X to share pictures of the meet-up and wrote, 'The triumphant Indian Cricket Team met with the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modiji, at his official residence today upon arrival. Sir, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to you for your inspiring words and the invaluable support you have provided to #TeamIndia Jai Hind'
