Jaber Motahrizadeh, an Iranian director, said that in most Iranian films, there was no fair view of Afghans and it was mostly focused on attracting the attention of festivals.
He added that in Iranian films, Afghans are presented as "less educated and illegal immigrants".
Mr. Motahrizadeh expressed these words in the 22nd series of film and documentary review meetings at "Iran Artists' House".
Criticizing the movies that are made about the people of Afghanistan, he added that until now there is still the view that "Afghans have a low level of literacy, they came to Iran illegally and they have taken our place."
This Iranian director mentioned his teaching experience in the schools where Afghans taught and said that "since then, the problems that my Afghan friends had were a problem for me."
Motahrizadeh gave these talks in the review session of a documentary entitled "Tehran Band" which is related to the challenges of an Afghan girl's life.
He also spoke about the presence of about five million Afghan immigrants in Iran and added: "I personally do not consider Afghans as immigrants, I think there is no difference between Afghans and Sistani."
He added that Afghans are "our brothers" culturally and linguistically.
How Afghans are represented in Iranian cinema is one of the things that has been the focus of attention of some Iranian researchers.
Based on the research conducted by Sahar Zairi Amiri, Farshad Asgarikia and Yusuf Khajir in 2021, about 26 Iranian films focusing on Afghans were reviewed.
The results of this research show that Afghans in the historical course of the analyzed films after the Iranian Islamic Revolution are immigrants, family-oriented, conservative, obedient, simple and hard-working people who have low financial power, cultural status and social class.
