Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah is the front-runner to become the next Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
As per the report in Cricbuzz, it is learned that the decision will solely be dependent on Shah if he wants to take up the role or not.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is all set to have the Annual Conference in Colombo later this month. Although the election for the Chairman post is unlikely to be discussed, it is learned that the Chairman will be directly elected in November this year.
Currently, Greg Barclay has held the position of the ICC Chairman for the last four years and is also eligible for another term. The New Zealander might wish to continue and take up the role again but if Jay Shah wishes to contest, the BCCI secretary is likely to be elected unopposed.
So far there has been no interest shown by Jay Shah but if he wishes to take up the role, it will be up for grabs. Recently ICC also changed the tenure of the chairman. Earlier it used to be three terms of two years each but now it will be two terms of three years each.
If Jay Shah becomes the ICC Chairman, he will be serving for three years following which he will be eligible to become the president of the BCCI in 2028. He is currently serving as the secretary of the Indian body and has done some great things already for Indian cricket.
There have been several reports in the international media that stated that if Jay Shah becomes the Chairman, he will be moving the ICC headquarters from Dubai to Mumbai. But the report in Cricbuzz stated that the BCCI secretary doesn't have anything of such on his mind.
Instead, Jay Shah wants to bring changes to the ICC. He reportedly wasn't impressed with the way T20 World Cup 2024 was held in the United States and the West Indies as according to him, the tournament was chaotic. The reports claimed that ICC will be formalizing the timeline for the chairman election in the annual conference.
