The Winter is coming but Delhi is all ready to deal with it!
A 15-point 'winter action plan' was announced by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday to deal with air pollution in the national capital in the winter, as reported by the IndianExpress.
Pointing out that the pollution issue is not just Delhi's, Kejriwal appealed to the states in the NCR to ensure that electricity is supplied round-the-clock to prevent the use of generator sets.
He also added that a meeting would have to be called, either by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) or the Union government, so that a joint plan can be made. 'The issue is not just that of Delhi. People of Punjab, Haryana and UP also need to get clean air,' he said at a press conference.
The steps that Kejriwal announced as part of the winter action plan are:
1. Thirteen air pollution hotspots have been identified, along with a special action plan for each hotspot. Thirteen special teams and a war room to keep pollution levels down.
2. We have been using the PUSA bio decomposer in farmland in Delhi to prevent stubble burning here for the past three years. We sprayed it on 4,400 acres last year, and this year, we will use it on 5,000 acres.
3. To deal with dust pollution - 591 special teams have been formed to check construction sites. Sites are required to register on a web portal for monitoring, and sites of over 500 sq m will have to set up anti-smog guns. A total of 82 mechanical road-sweeping machines, 530 water-sprinkling machines, and 258 anti-smog guns will be deployed on the roads in winter.
4. To control vehicular pollution - 385 teams have been formed to check PUC certificates and enforce the ban on old diesel and petrol vehicles. In congested areas where traffic is heavy, 90 streets have been identified, and alternate routes will be publicised.
5. To enforce the ban on open burning of garbage, 611 teams have been formed.
6. There are 1,727 registered industrial units in Delhi and 66 teams have been formed to enforce their use of PNG.
