“Our country has come too far to allow a defeated President to turn himself into a successful tyrant by upending our democratic institutions, fomenting violence, and, as I saw it, opening the door to those in our country whose hatred and bigotry threaten equality and justice for all Americans,” the panel’s chairman, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-Miss.), said in the foreword to the report.
The newly elected GOP majority has made it clear that it intends to scrutinise the committee's work for errors and oversights. Republicans are likely to block any congressional action necessary to implement many of the committee's other recommendations, even though some may be implemented, such as the reform of the Electoral Count Act, which is being discussed during this month's lame-duck session.
Trump quickly released a statement on the Truth Social website in an effort to undermine the committee's work and falsely attribute the violence on January 6 to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
“The highly partisan Unselect Committee Report purposely fails to mention the failure of Pelosi to heed my recommendation for troops to be used in D.C., show the “Peacefully and Patrioticly” words I used, or study the reason for the protest, Election Fraud,” the former president wrote. “WITCH HUNT!”
